Cloth Muse

Muse, tormentor, you tempt me
with visions of the new, the fresh, the whole.
You dare to show yourself virginal and triumphant,
you pile of old rags,
made of bits and pieces of dreams
thrown out by the neighbors
and some I’ve trampled on myself
then sewn back together out of pity.

Cloth mother, false mother, comforter,
on your soft shape
I rest my head
you draw my tears
into your layered depths
where they mingle with those
of all who have been betrayed by beauty,
in sweetness and release.

Muse de Tissu

Muse, qui me tourmente,
tu me tentes avec des visions de neuf, de frais, d’entier.
Tu oses te montrer vierge et triomphante
Tas de vieilles fripes
Faites de parcelles de rêves
Jetées par les voisins
Et quelques-unes que j’ai piétinées moi-même
Puis recousues par pitié

Mère de lainage, fausse mère, consolatrice
Sur tes courbes moelleuses
Je repose ma tête
Tu prends  mes larmes
Dans tes couches profondes
Où elles se mêlent à celles
De tous ceux que la beauté a trahis,
En douceur et délivrance
